Volker sets practice pace ahead of 20th Reedy Race

Ronald Volker set the pace in practice today ahead of the 20th running of the Reedy Race of Champions.  The defending champion set the fastest 3-consecutive laps of the Tamiya Raceway track ahead of 2015 Champion Marc Rheinard with Reedy Race first timer Bruno Coelho completing the Top 3.  While the heads up racing format means today’s time count for little, probably the biggest news from the four practice run was the low traction.  This has left drivers slightly unsure of what to expect going into the first of the 12 rounds of racing tomorrow morning.  With a newly laid top surface to contend with, clouds prevented the California sun from bringing up track temperatures with the cool conditions leaving drivers unsure of what to expect tomorrow.

Pinisch & Hönigl win at Austrian 1/10th Buggy Nats Rd1

Round 1 of the Austrian 1/10th Electric Off-road Nationals was held at the MRC Oberaich track. Although rather big for a 1/10th scale race the track is among the favourite of most drivers with the natural dirt surface being very challenging but a lot of fun. Saturday started off with a track that got really bumpy but also offered high traction yet overnight rain changed things massively, leading to much lower grip but a smoother track. After some very close racing in the 2WD mains, Peter Pinisch (Team Associated) walked away with the win from Xray’s Hupo Hönigl while Stefan Pfeiffhofer (Team Associated) had to settle for 3rd overall.

Martin Bayer sweeps Czech 1/8th Off-road Nats Rd1

The opening round of the Czech 1/8th Off-road National Championship was held in Kolin. Right from the start Xray’s Martin Bayer looked like the man to beat as he set fast laps right from the practice sessions on. Saturday ad the weather was much colder which resulted in near zero traction but this did not stop Martin from being a league of his own, taking the TQs in both the 1/8th Nitro and E-Buggy classes. Xray team mate Kaja Novotny would line up in 2nd in both classes.

Ryan Cavalieri sweeps JConcepts Spring INS

This year’s JConcepts Spring Indoor Nationals Series hosted by Tacoma R/C Raceway in Tacoma, Washington, had quite the buzz surrounding the event as many heard the rumors of an elite, “best-ever” field of pro drivers traveling to compete at the 2017 Spring INS. The list included National Champions, Reedy Champions, and even World Champions. With names that belong on cereal boxes, the hype was high and ultimately the hype became a reality. Joining in on this year’s event was current IFMAR World Champion Spencer Rivkin, 4-time World Champion Ryan Cavalieri, National and Reedy Champion Dustin Evans, Reedy Open Champion Brent Thielke, young gun Daimon Borkowicz, and Yokomo star Carson Wernimont. Coupled with the ultra fast locals that have all come up under the mentorship of Northwest legend, Scott Brown, the weekend was unforgettable as it was the biggest race in the Northwest for 1/10th electric with entries nearing 300 in total.

Joel Valander sweeps Finnish Summer Nats Rd1

The opening round of the Finnish Summer Nationals was held at the Hyvinkää track. As usual the 2WD portion of the event was held on Saturday while Sunday was 4WD day. Thankfully the weather was great all weekend, making for good racing conditions on the pretty old and blown-out track whose large size and high speed sections are enjoyed by most drivers. The opening 2WD qualifier was a very close affair between Karri Salmela and Joel Valander. Both were separated by 0.1s in the end, with the better end for Karri as Joel got sideways on the last lap which cost him the TQ. In the following rounds Joel would hold the upper hand to grab the overall TQ from Karri in 2nd and Toni Niinivirta 3rd.
