Jokerteam GT12 Championship Rd6 – Report

With round 5 of the 2017 Jokerteam GT12 Championship, initially scheduled for July 2nd, postponed to September 24th, round 6 kicked off regularly in sunny and hot conditions. As the qualification rounds got under way, it was a very close race between the top 2 across qualifying with both Mattia Dall’Oca and Ivan Milesi being the only drivers to score 27 lap runs. With the track conditions getting hotter, drivers found it hard to find the best set-up as well as tyre compound. Dall’Oca continued his good form from previous rounds of the Championship, taking pole position from Ivan Milesi and Alessandro Rampini. It was then a fierce battle among the top three qualifiers in the A-mains. In A1 Mattia Dall’Oca hit troubles allowing both Ivan Milesi and Alessandro Rampini to take 1st and 2nd with solid runs. In A2 Mattia delivered a faultless drive closely followed by Ivan and Alessandro Rampini. Finally, in the deciding A3, it was Ivan Milesi who held it down and took the win using his experience and talent. Ivan would capitalise on Mattia’s early mistake and never looked back, while Alessandro Rampini finished strong and wrapped up 3rd. A change in the Championship’s calendar will now see round 7 (initially scheduled for August 27th) postponed to October 8th in order to avoid conflict with the recently announced 2017 Italian UISP Championship which, for the first time in Italy, will include the GT12 class.

Q2 in Shanghai again goes to JJ Wang

Xray Factory driver JJ Wang continued to stamp his authority on the event as he took another round of qualifying in the modified class at the 3rd round of the 2017 CETC presented by Infinity at RCI V2 in Shanghai. A very consistent round for the Chinese American driver this run however was slower than Q1 due to the mostly unexpected drop in traction. Yokomo factory driver Nicholas Lee once again had to settle for second place, however the gap to Wang in 1st this time was down to just 1.9 seconds as the Singaporean continued to improve. Xray youngster Lao Ming Hao and Awesomatix driver Rocket Zhang maintained their position from the opening round with the former National Champion just 0.2 seconds behind the CETC Rd1 Rising Star winner in 3rd. For this round Yokomo driver Motor King managed to regain some of his lost practice pace to take 5th place ahead of 2016 Reedy Race Open Modified class Champion Julian Wong. Rob Janssen wins at Dutch EP On-road Nationals Rd4

Round 4 of the Dutch Electric On-road Nationals was recently held in Groningen in the north of the country. The usually bumpy track underwent a bit of a revision by the club, resulting in less bumps but a lower grip but at the end of the day it was the same for all competitors. Sunday, race day and the drivers were greeted by overnight rain. In the Touring class local racer Sybrand de Boer set the TQ in Q1 and Q2 with Rob Janssen being hot on his heels especially in Q2. In the opening main final and with a different tyre preparation Rob was able to hold contact with Sybrand until it started to rain again and the carnage began. With unusual racing lines Rob was able to get an advantage and he was able to pull away from the field until the others found out. A2 was completely rain soaked and only five drivers dared to attend the final that was ultimately won by Rob who was the fastest on rain tyres and pulling his unusual lines. Also attending in A3 despite having scored the overall win, as every result counts towards the overall championship, it was again Rob who excelled, taking his third win of the day and further improving his lead in the season standings.
