BRCA Regional Series Rd2 – Report

BRCA Regional Series Rd2 – Report

The Southport club held the second round of the UK BRCA Electric Buggy Regional Series. The track had lots of rain the week leading up to Sunday and the club worked very hard to clear the water off the track. Sunday morning did start off damp and the track dried slowly but it didn’t totally dry up all day. After some very close qualifying in th2 2WD class it was Craig Collinson (Team C) who took TQ with Xray’s Stu Wood, running an XB2 prototype, in 2nd and local hero Chris Evison (Team C) in 3rd. The final was very close right from the start. Craig made a mistake which let Stu and Chris pull away a few seconds. Stu and Chris were head to head until the very last corner of the last lap and Stu tried to go for the inside line but clipped the apex too much and went upside down on top of Chris. After the marshal did his job Chris Evison with the Team C car came out the winner with Stu 2nd less than a second behind him.

Neil Cragg wins BRCA Nitro Buggy Nationals Rd2

Neil Cragg wins BRCA Nitro Buggy Nationals Rd2

The second round of the BRCA Nitro Buggy Nationals was held in Kent this past weekend. The main final was a thriller to the wire and not a race for the faint hearted. Although Elliott Boots (Kyosho) took TQ, the final was a close battle between Neil Cragg (Team Associated) and Boots for much of the race. Boots held a steady gap but Cragg had a fuel stop in hand. At least until he ran dry – then all hell broke loose. Neil’s misfortune was a gift for Boots until the role was reversed. Boots ran into clutch issues and eventually ground to a stop. Ultimately Neil took the win from Darren Bloomfield (Agama) while Elliott still snatched the final podium spot despite the mechanical issues.

sun_yokotitle-620x372

Lee Martin has achieved the Euro Offroad Series title double, fourth place in the season finale at the Hudy Racing Arena enough for the Yokomo driver to clinch the 4WD title from previous undefeated 3-time champion Joern Neumann.  Having won the 2WD driver title at the previous round in Austria, Martin becomes only the second driver to clinch both titles with Neumann having achieved the feat in the first two seasons of the indoor 1:10 Offroad Championship.  While all the attention was on the title, the fourth & final round of Season #4 would go to Xray’s Martin Bayer, last year’s title runner up claiming his first win of the season ahead of Top Qualifier Naoto Matsukura and Saturday’s 2WD winner Michal Orlowski.

Malin Karlsen wins at Gerland Cup in Norway

Malin Karlsen wins at Gerland Cup in Norway

The opening round of the Norwegian Gerland Cup was held on a newly refurbished multi-surface track that offered a mix of dirt, astro turf and concrete. The race format for the 1/8th E-Buggy class saw three 5 minute qualifiers followed by triple 12 minute A-mains with the best two to count. Young Malin Karlsen comfortably took the TQ with the only 9 laps run to line up in pole position for the A-mains. After some bobbles in the opening main Malin continued to dominate the competition in the final legs were she would take wins in A1 and A2 to grab the overall victory with one final to go. Just before the final A-main hail hit the track making for slippery conditions and despite having won the first two A-mains Malin also opted to run in A3 and after making some issues on her own she dropped down the field only to find herself back in 2nd place after she found her rhythm again. Although it seemed impossible to catch up to the car running in front Malin decided to continue to push as hard as she could and with only 2 laps to go the car in front ran into problems and Malin could take the 3rd A-final win of the day. Behind her Patter Strand and Tom Erik Strand rounded out the top 3 result.

Matsukura wins A1, Martin heads title fight

Matsukura wins A1, Martins heads title fight

Naoto Matsukura took an easy win in the opening A-Main at the Euro Offroad Series season #4 finale. Starting from the TQ positon, the Kyosho driver finished almost 7-seconds clear of second placed Martin Bayer with Michal Orlowski completing the Top 3. While up front the race was rather processional, further back all the attention focused on the title battle between Lee Martin and Joern Neumann, the pair clashing early on.  In the end it was Martin who would be the top finisher in 4th with Neumann finishing 6th behind Martin’s new Yokomo team-mate Marc Rheinard.  Commenting on his race Matsukura had little to say other than he ‘drove safe’ and he needs to ‘do same again once more’ to get the overall win he predicted when he topped seeding practice.
