Advantage Maifield going into Reedy Race decider

sun_ryanM3-620x372

Just as he did last year, only to lose out on the conveted title to arch rival Ryan Cavalieri, Ryan Maifield heads into the final round of racing at the Reedy Race of Champions holding the advantage, albeit just by a single point.  The penultimate round witnessed the first race where title contenders Maifield and Tebo went up against one another in 4WD with the former coming out on top.  While the win would go to HB’s Drew Moller, Maifield, having started two rows ahead of Tebo, would come out with a second with Tebo third 4.3-seconds back.  With defending Champion Cavalieri finishing his encounter of the round 2nd behind Travis Amezcua, it means the 21st running of the event will crown an all new champion with that to be decided between Maifield and Tebo.

Reedy title hots up as Tebo & Maifield win again

Reedy title hots up as Tebo & Maifield win again

With just two of the 12 rounds of heads up racing remaining, the battle for the 21st running of the Reedy Race of Champions at OCRC Raceway in Huntington Beach is hotting up into a duel between Jared Tebo and Ryan Maifield.  Round 4 of 4WD would see both drivers bring their tally’s to 3 wins which when dropped scores are taken into account puts the pair equal at the top of the points although now it is Maifield who holds the tie-break advantage due to him having the fastest combined 2WD & 4WD race times.  For defending champion Ryan Cavalieri the round saw him lose further ground, while impressive from 9th on the grid, he could only finish 2nd with his hopes of a hat trick of consecutive Reedy titles starting to fade. Interestingly the penultimate round will be the first time in 4WD that Maifield and Tebo start in the same race, with the grid draw putting the TLR driver 4th and the Kyosho 8th.

Tebo opens final day at Reedy Race with important win

Jared Tebo opened the final day at the Reedy Race of Champions with an important win that when dropped scores are taken into account puts the Kyosho driver in the lead from overnight leader Ryan Maifield on the tie breaker. Both chasing their first title at the 21st running of the event, they each started their respective third round of 4WD action from 7th on the grid with Maifield up first and getting a third while in the next encounter Tebo despite giving away his lead in the race with a mistake got lucky in the final lap to claim his second win of 4WD.  In the third race defending Champion Ryan Cavalieri, starting from the front row of the grid, would cruise to an easy victory to register his first 4WD win.  Moving the Associated driver up to third in the standings back ahead of Joern Neumann, with dropped scores the Californian sits 3-points adrift. Former champion Neumann is a further 2-back, both drivers needing both good results and bad rounds for Maifield and Tebo to get back in the hunt for adding another Reedy Race title to their CVs.

Serpent SRX-4 1/10th 4wd buggy

Serpent are debuting a pre release version of their all new SRX-4 1/10th 4wd buggy here at the Reedy Race. Being run by the car’s designer Billy Easton it features a 2-belt configuration with a long centre belt and short side belt, which helps keep the centre of gravity low and the weight centralised. Positioning of the motor was a priority when designing the car, keeping it centralised and to the rear to help with rear traction which in turn allows you to run a more aggressive steering setup.

MIP B5M aluminium 3-gear transmission

MIP B5M aluminium 3-gear transmission

During this weekend‘s Reedy Offroad Race of Champions MIP have a new 3-gear transmission for Team Associated’s B5M buggy to show. The sturdy 7075 aluminium case offers improved precision, optimised gear mesh and thus higher efficiency compared to the standard moulded cases. At the same time the transmission package is relatively of the same overall weight as the OEM 4-gear transmission, keeping the weight distribution the same as what the car was designed for which can often be more beneficial than scrubbing tons of weight. Also as the motor sits at a 3mm offset to the left an optimised left to right weight balance is achieved – the needed spacer and new spring will be supplied with the transmission kit. On top of that the all-alloy gearbox will act as a giant heatsink, making for improved motor cooling and a reduced power fade during a run. The 3-gear design also makes for a more efficient operation making the gearbox ideal for stock and modified racers alike.

Maifield & Neumann double up in Round 2

Maifield & Neumann double up in Round 2

Bringing Day 2 of racing at the 21st running of the Reedy Race of Champions to a close, Round 2 of 4WD netted double wins for Ryan Maifield and Joern Neumann with Jared Tebo, points table leader at the end of 2WD, claiming his first 4WD win.  A round that saw all three drivers take straight forward wins, the biggest drama was for Steven Hartson, the World Champion suffering a DNF having started out his preferred class with only a fourth from a front row start in Round 1.  The round would also see Cavalieri lose ground to now points leader Maifield as he took third in his race behind Neumann and Travis Amezcua.  The result also sees Neumann go ahead of Cavalieri in the points table.

Neumann Phend & Maifield win opening 4WD encounter

Neumann Phend & Maifield win opening 4WD encounter

The opening round of 4WD at the Reedy Race of Champions would see wins for Ryan Maifield, Joern Neumann and Dakotah Phend but it was Neumann’s win from the back of the grid that would be the biggest talking point.  While Maifield’s relatively straight forward win from 8th of the grid would move the TLR driver to the top of the points table, and Phend converted pole position into a convincing win over Ty Tessmann, the action all happened in the opening race.

Tebo, Maifield & Hartson tied at Reedy Race after 2WD

Tebo, Maifield & Hartson tied at Reedy Race after 2WD

After six rounds of head to head 2WD racing the stage is set for an exciting second half of the Reedy Race of Champions as the switch is made to 4WD with Jared Tebo, Ryan Maifield and Steven Hartson tied for the points lead.  The final round of 2WD racing would produce one of the more heavily loaded title contender encounters in which Tebo would get the better of defending champion Ryan Cavalieri. That win would see the Kyosho driver, when the race time tie break is taken into account, top the final points table for the 2WD part of the event with Maifield, who drops his Round 6 4th place finish, second and Hartson third having ended off with a 2nd that allowed him to discard an earlier 9th place finish.
