Ronald Volker

Ronald Volker backed up his early free practice form by topping the two rounds of controlled practice at the ETS season opener in the Czech Republic to secure himself the top seeding for qualifying.  The Team Yokomo driver set the fastest time over 3-consecutive laps in the final practice by a convincing 3/10ths of a second from team-mate Naoto Matsukura.  Behind the two Yokomos, Alexander Hagberg took his Xray to the third fastest time ahead of Freddy Sudhoff while Tamiya’s Marc Rheinard ended up only 9th fastest.

Hébert wins at 2013 Helloween Classic

Hébert wins at 2013 Helloween Classic

The Halloween Classic has become one of the premier events of the carpet racing season. As the first event of the 2013/14 Midwest Grand Slam Series, interest in the event was at an all-time high. Hosted by the Gate and NORCAR, the event created such a buzz that it sold out two months in advance. Over 200 entries featuring 110 racers from 10 states and Canada were on hand to battle it out at the newly upgraded Gate facility. Friday was set aside for practice followed by three rounds of qualifying on Saturday. A fourth round of qualifying on Sunday morning was followed by the main events. Rocket round qualifying and single A-Main format, typical for on-road carpet racing, was once again utilised. Team Associated Reedy driver Keven Hébert was once again concentrating on the Modified TC and 1/12 Modified classes. Coming off his 1/12 Modified win at the IIC, Hébert was seeking to continue his winning streak in what is considered the F1 of electric on-road racing with his Reedy-powered 12R5.2. In complete contrast, teammate Myron Kinnard was competing in the power-limited, yet highly competitive, VTA (Vintage Trans-Am) class.

Zen Racing Zen-RS conversion kit

Zen Racing Zen-RS conversion kit

Zen Racing introduce the Zen-RS conversion kit that has been developed to offer the 1/12th racer a wider tuning window and a more neutral balance in all grip conditions. A revised pivot location helps the car to have a stable balance and the new chassis layout incorporates a bellcrank steering system. The bellcrank offers a true Ackerman effect, removes all bump steer if required and the new servo placement makes for a better balanced chassis layout. The battery location is adjustable with the pack being held in position by two LiPo braces which can be moved forwards and backwards in three fixed locations. Also included is the Zen adjustable rear pod and a set of front and rear ride height shims making for a perfectly stable race platform. Servo posts, centre shock mount and rear posts are also included in the conversion with a final update in the form of a diff thrust bearing. The thrust bearing and spacer take away the side load from the outer diff ball race offering better consistency and diff action under high loads. To complete the conversion an R5 based front end, side links, rear pivot and side spring set-up, AE centre and side shock, body posts and rear axle are needed.

Wynn and Gerber double at Halloween Classic

Wynn and Gerber double at Halloween Classic

The Halloween Classic race in the Cleveland, OH has been a well attended event for over 20 years. The 2013 version had an impressive 205 entries from all over the USA. Most all of the carpet road course specialists were in Ohio for a weekend of ultra-competitive racing. In the Formula 1 class, Brian Wynn wanted a bit of revenge after dominating the Vegas race a few weeks before. At that race, after winning every round of qualifying with his new CRC WTF-1 car to set TQ, an incident in the A-main with a lapped driver cost him the win. During the Halloween Classic Brian again set the fastest time in qualifying to take TQ. In the USF1 triple 15 minute A-main format, Brian won all 3 mains and took the overall victory. CRC driver and Ohio native Wayne Gerber received his CRC WTF-1 at the event, never having a chance to try the car until practice on Friday before the mains. Wayne took second to Brian in each of the 3 A-mains to secure the second position overall. In the World GT class Brian went on to TQ and win with his CRC Gen-X 10 SE car topped of by the new Black Art GT86 body. Teammate Wayne Gerber again took the runner-up spot.
