Important win for Maifield in Round 5

Important win for Maifield in Round 5

Ryan Maifield secured an important win this morning at the Reedy Race of Champions to pull clear at the top of the points standings as his chief rival Ryan Cavalieri had his worst result of the event. With the Team Associated duo lining up side by side on the front row of the grid for the most anticipated of the 2WD encounters, it was the pole position starting Maifield who got the best start to lead away. With Cavalieri right on his rear wing, the race looked to be a rather straight forward 1-2 points haul for the American pairing however on lap 9 a mistake by Maifield spiced things up. Turning too early for the corner after the Double Double the No.1 Reedy powered Centro B4.2 hooked the piping rolling over back out into the line of Cavalieri. With the two cars briefly stuck together, separating after doing a number of pirouettes, this allowed the field to catch back up. While Maifield got away first, Cavalieri had a number of cars on his tail. Making it down the straight in second a roll over after the step down was enough to allow Dustin Evans, Brian Strange and Kody Numedahl to slip through. Only able to find a way back passed Numedahl a clearly frustrated Cavalieri would only finish 4th.

On the Grapevine – Odense & Berlin

Grapevine Berlin

After a bit of time off so as to facilitate the visit of a certain Mr. Claus to my two daughters and to spend some quality time with family & friends the dawn of the New Year brought with it the busiest start to a season yet. Traveling to the west of Ireland to celebrate bringing in the New Year with a long time friend & his family, during our stay the question came up as to what date I would be free so as to attend the Christening of his new born son for whom I have been asked to stand as God Father. Looking up my calendar it was only then I actually realised just how many weekends, some extended, are going to be spent at various rc events around the world – over 9 weeks there are 8 events to be reported on. Kicking off that run of events was a race that in many ways is responsible for the continued growth of Red RC event coverage calendar – the DHI Cup.

Cavalieri gets first win in Round 2

Cavalieri gets first win in Round 2

Defending Reedy Race Champion Ryan Cavalieri claimed his first win of this year’s 20th running of the event when he saw off a late challenge from the ever spectacular Ryan Maifield in a race that saw the duo produce the first 16 lap runs for 2WD around the OCRC Raceway. In the other two encounters of the round former 2WD World Champion Neil Cragg took a tone to tone win in Heat 1 over Rick Hohwart while in Heat 2 current 4WD World Champion Steven Hartson came through from 4th to win by almost 7-seconds from Cody King. For Round 1′s most convincing winner Dustin Evans it was a tough second race for the TLR driver. Starting Heat 1 from 8th on the grid, the former champion was making his way to the front and looking good for at least a Top 3 finish but a coming together with Germany’s Oliver Scholz on lap 4 dropped him back to last from where he was only able to recover to 4th.

Evans takes most convincing win of opening RROC encounter

Evans takes most convincing win of opening RROC encounter

Former champion Dustin Evans took the most convincing win of the opening round of races at the 20th running of the Reedy Race of Champions in which all three races were won by the TQ starting drivers.  Winner of the world famous race in 2011 on a tie break with current champion Ryan Cavalieri, the Team Losi Racing driver put in a faultless race winning by 5.6 seconds from another former champion Joern Neumann. What was more significant about the Colorado driver’s win was that he did it in the fastest race time something that could again prove vital come Sunday evening.  With a time some 5-seconds slower than that of Evans, Ryan Maifield took Heat 1 over Neil Cragg. Heat 3 went to Marc Rheinard in a three way battle of World Champions, the touring car ace holding off Cody King and Cavalieri who came through from the back twice.
