Essex Winter Series Round 6 report

Essex Winter Series Round 6 report

The sixth and final round of the Essex Winter Series took place this weekend. Once again, the event was fully booked many weeks before the meeting, including a number of top drivers. With a final total of 165 different drivers competing and over 550 individual entries to the series, the organisers were keen to thank all the drivers for their attendance and support. The Super Stock 13.5 class saw a straight championship battle between Tony Broad and the defending champion Paul Pinkney, both drivers tied on points coming into the final meeting. As qualifying begun, it was Paul’s Schumacher team-mate, last years championship runner-up Ashley Wiffen who topped the first round, with James Hart in second and Phil Chambers in third with their X-rays.

Nathan Waters wins 2WD at Worksop Players

With a close battle in both classes over the proceeding rounds of racing, it was always going to be a closely fought series. Nathan who put his DEX210 into TQ position from the first round of qualifying, and then go on to dominate the 2WD class throughout the days racing to take first overall and conclude his series campaign as Players Champion. Team Durango super racer Craig Collinson followed Nathan closely to take second overall in the series. Team Durango drivers had been forging a comprehensive collection of 4WD results during the previous rounds of this star-studded race series. The DEX410v3 vehicles of Craig Collinson and Nathan Waters had already made a big impression in previous meetings at the Worksop venue. With the closing stages of this nationally renowned series coming to an action packed conclusion, Craig Collinson was to place his DEX410v3 in fifth overall. Nathan was pipped by Neil Cragg but was again a force to be reckoned with by securing second overall in a field that was as strong as any UK based off-road line-up.

Simo Ahoniemi wins at 1/12th Euros

Simo Ahoniemi wins at 1/12th Euros

The 1/12th European Championships was held in the city of Oulu, in northern Finland. A very small turn out of only 50 drivers, divided on two classes, joined the race. Some of the best 1/12 drivers in Europe were still present, making the race rather competitive. The carpet used was not the usual CRC one but a completely different type which never really developed high traction making car setup difficult for everyone. Instead, the competitors saw a similar situation to that one found at last year’s World Championships where a wide, black groove formed at the track. Traction actually decreased as the days went on, due to all the oil from the additives making the track slippery. This is a strange phenomenon seen at 1/12 races lately, which probably has to do with the oil based tire additives which are used when the rule is “open” for additives. One big change in the EFRA rules for 2013 was that a round by round qualifying system was used in the 1/12 class for the first time. 3 out of 6 points were counted to determine the final starting positions.

Neumann wins 2WD at EOS Austria

Joern Pole

Joern Neumann has won the third round of the TLR/Spektrum Euro Offroad Series presented by Horizon Hobby in 2WD Buggy despite the impressive efforts of class novice Martin Bayer who swapped the lead of the second A-Main with the Team Durango driver in Leoben, Austria this morning.  In the end a last lap attempt by Bayer to repass the Top Qualifier and Leg 1 winner resulted in the Team Xray driver needed to be marshaled allowing Neumann to win by 3-seconds to secure his second overall win of the 2012/13 season.  Bayer, who set the fastest lap of the race on the penultimate lap, was able to hold on to second ahead of 1:8 Offroad rivals Robert Batlle and David Ronnefalk who managed to come through from respective 7th & 10th starting spots on the grid.
