Round 3 of the British National 1/10th Nitro On-road Championships were held at the Mendip Raceway in the South West of the UK. The weather on Saturday was good sunny all day. The top three drivers for 200mm Touring in practice were Mark Green (Serpent) Joe Kerry (Capricorn) and Alex Thurston (Serpent). In the 220mm GT class Glyn Beal (Serpent) was the fastest with Rickard K (Xray) very close behind. Race day Sunday and the weather forecasters got it wrong. Bruno Coelho took the opening round of qualifying at ENS France, heading an Xray 1-2 ahead of new for 2017 team-mate Alessio Mazzeo. Opening the fourth season of the ENS by topping the morning’s two rounds of seeding practice from former champion Jilles Groskamp, Coelho would be almost 3-second quicker than Mazzeo over the 4-minute qualifier. Preventing an Xray Top 3 , Capricorn driver Kyle Branson would set the third fastest time just ahead of the Xray of Mulhouse track resident Leo Arnold. …36 nitro cars and 21 electric cars and by the end of the practice day Mark Green was the quickest with his XRD-powered Serpent in the nitro class while Alex Thurston with his Arrowmax-powered Serpent, was the quickest electric class driver. The two would also come out on top after Sunday’s qualifiers and they would again excel in the finals, with Mark Green taking the nitro win from Andrew Hastings (Shepard/O.S./Matrix) in 2nd and Richard Hicklin (Serpent/O.S./Contact) 3rd. …leader had an incident which put Alex and Mark fighting for the lead. After the last pit stop Mark came out behind Alex. Green went inside, outside, hard into the corner, slow into the corner but Thurston had him covered off. With just a few minutes remaining Mark tried to overtake but hit a kerb and went off track with left Alex an easy coast to the end of the race where he would take the win some 8 to 9 seconds up the road from Mark. Serpent have announced the signing of UK frontrunner, Alex Thurston to their international team. Alex is focussed on the 1/10th 200mm nitro class and he will campaign Serpent’s 748 platform at events such as the ENS, the European Championships and the National Championship while also having select outings in the electric 1/10th Touring and 1/8th Electric on-road classes.
