Essex Winter Series 2013-14 Rd1 – Report

Essex Winter Series 2013-14 Rd1 – Report

The third season of the Essex Winter Series got underway last weekend. The series had already attracted a maximum capacity of 120 entries for every one of the six-round series, with entries completely selling out within 4 hours of opening. This year saw the addition of the Modified Class, alongside the popular Pro Stock class for 13.5 turn motors and open speed controllers). The Stock class moved over to the now-standard 17.5 zero-timing format. As the racing got underway, all eyes in the premier Modified Class, which this year is sponsored by Muchmore, were on Euros podium finisher Elliott Harper, as he made his debut at a major carpet event with his Team Durango DETC410. Elliott showed that despite limited carpet testing with the prototype car, he had quickly got it dialled in as he topped every one of the four rounds of qualifying. Behind, the battle for second place was between Kyle Branson, best known for his on-road gas racing, Matt White and last year’s EWS Pro Stock Champion, Paul Pinkney. Kyle took second in round one, ahead of Matt and Paul, whilst Paul was second in round two. Kyle found more speed in rounds three and four  to take the second place points to secure him second place on the A Final grid, with Paul ending third overall and Matt fourth.

Keven Hebert double at 2013 IIC

Keven Hebert double at 2013 IIC

Now in its 9th year, the International Indoor Championships (IIC) has become an unrivaled RC racing extravaganza. Top drivers from around the world gathered at the classic Riviera Hotel & Casino to battle for the newly introduced IIC championship belt. Race organizer Scotty Ernst once again created a challenging layout while Sin City provided plenty of after-hours activities for those that wanted to put the day’s racing activities behind them. Reedy/AE factory driver Keven Hébert won the 1/12 Modified and Super Stock 13.5 TC classes last year and was looking to make it two in a row. After four hard-fought rounds of qualifying, Keven started on the pole position in Super Stock 13.5 and in the third position in 1/12 Modified. Driving his Reedy-powered 12R5.2, Hébert took control of the 1/12 Modified A-final just past the one-minute mark and never looked back. With no serious challenges, he was able to comfortably win the class for the second year in a row and claim the IIC championship belt. The pole position start in Super Stock 13.5 TC allowed Keven to drive his Reedy-powered TC6.1 Factory Team prototype to an early lead. Unchallenged, Keven took the wire-to-wire win to earn his second championship belt of the weekend and second class win in a row.

Smokem Racing 417LX steering arms

Smokem Racing has just released their new 417LX steering arms. These 417LX steering arms are 2mm longer than those found standard on the TRF417 line of electric tourers. The extra length in these steering arms translates to a longer swing radius. Not only does this provide increased steering throw, it also gives a more linear steering response for superior driving feel. The 417LX steering arms come pre-fitted with metal-shielded ball bearings for an ultra smooth response. They suit all of Tamiya’s TRF417 and TRF416 lines of electric touring cars.

Solaris Magic Formula tyre additive

Solaris Magic Formula tyre additive

New from Solaris come two rubber tyre additives in the form of Magic Formula A and B. Starting with Magic Formula A, the tyre sauce contains ingredients that are activated by heat making it ideal for medium to high track temperatures and medium to high grip conditions. Using the additive improves traction over a long period of time and it also acts as a tyre conditioner as it prolongs the life time of the rubber and prevents surface graining. Designed for lower track temperatures and indoor asphalt and carpet racing is Magic Formula B. Sharing some of the characteristics of the “A” additive, “B” is better suited for lower temperatures. It also is easier to work with and gives more initial grip. Both chemicals are very economical to use as it needs only 2 to 4 drops per tyre to prepare the rubber.
