We have finally arrived in Portugal where conditions are overcast making for welcomed cooler conditions. After a quick walk around the pits to say hello to drivers the main talk is that of the blistering pace of the Sirio team drivers and in particular electric touring car ace Jilles Groskamp. The Dutch driver is fast and more importantly very consistent although a 2 speed one-way bearing failure in the warm-up for the first controlled practice means we will have to wait till this evening to get a true indication of his pace over 10-minutes. He came close in Round 1 but with the demise of the first round Top Qualifier, Ronald Volker, Tamiya hotshot Viktor Wilck won the second qualifier from Andy Moore. Wilck made the most of the cooler track conditions to knock over 2 seconds off the fastest time set by Volker in Round 1 but it was a close run thing. While the Swede was much happier with the handling of his TRF416 he struggled with run time as his cars power dropped off 2 laps from the end. Drivers have had their first official practice run at the 2008 EFRA Euros here in Vila Real with most drivers reporting an incident free run. Jilles Groskamp suffered the biggest drama of the morning when he lost a front wheel off his Tamiya. ‘I adjusted the front camber just before my run and when I put on my front wheels I tightened the nuts by hand and then afterwards forgot to do them up properly. Speed Passion have been in touch to tell us the exciting news that 2002 IFMAR World Champion Surikarn Chaidajsuriya has joined their team. Surikarn will be using the Competition version 2.0 motor series as well as other optional brushless equipment to power his Hot Bodies Cyclone. We received a small report from the 1/10th scale EFRA GP that is being run this weekend in Gubbio, Italy. Saturday was scheduled to have 2 rounds of controlled practice followed by four rounds of qualification, however rain interrupted the racing, and saw the track get dry only after the first round of qualification. With the final heat of today also stopped because of the rain, it was Dutch Sirio racer Jilles Groskamp that is currently on pole position, ahead of Mugen racer Giuseppe D’Angelo in 2nd and current European Champion Dario Balestri in 3rd. The organisers of the Much More backed European Touring Series, which sees its final round of the 07/08 series take place in Andernach Germany, have confirmed that former World Champion and 2008 Reedy Race winner Atsushi Hara will be coming to round 4 on the 27th – 29th of June.
