2017 Keilor Cup & Victorian Drivers Series Rd4 – Report

The fourth and final round of the Victorian Drivers Series was held at the Keilor Track in Melbourne. Over 130 entries were received for the event, which was re-run two weeks later than planned due to unseasonal summer rain washing out the original date. The Keilor club had prepared a classic outdoor dirt track which grooved up through the weekend but still had a fine dust layer in the hot summer weather, making tyre choice and setup critical to get maximum traction. Racers had travelled from as far away as Broken Hill, Mildura and Adelaide to join in this successful series. The Keilor Cup this year had extra meaning due to the recent passing of life member and long time president Mark Polistena, and many racers carried memorial stickers on their vehicles to honour his memory.

WRCR Winter Series Rd3 – Report

Round 3 of the WRCR Winter Series was held at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Saline, Michigan. The 2017/18 season at the Washtenaw RC Raceway is drawing entries beyond the levels of the past five years. With 139 entries in nine classes, most classes had multiple heats of racing action with Stock Buggy fielding 28 cars. This round the traffic ran counter-clockwise making the back straight super fast. The Stock Buggy class continued to grow in round 3 reaching 28 entries. This round 2010 ROAR National Champion joined the party securing TQ for the event after three qualifiers. As the top group jockeyed for starting position behind Kenny, the fight to stay in the A-main continued until the last laps of the last heat. Patrick Ferris and Nat Potter made their last ditch effort to improve their qualifying times vying to bump Tom Erickson and Gary Reiser and getting into the big show. The laps clicked off with both drivers in range. Nat could not hold the pace and finished behind Gary. Patrick was able to finish strong slipping between Tom and Gary. Gary then had to edge up his times to respond. The final group ran fast and smooth which allowed Gary to set the pace he needed in the opening half. All it took was a few laps missing his marks to degrade his pace. In the end he produced his best finish of the day but was not good enough to remain in the A-main.

Pablo Fernández & Rubén Rodríguez win at EL1TE Race

The newly refurbished indoor track of Team Astur RC played host to the EL1TE Race 2017 recently. The race, held in Gijón, in the north of Spain, saw an attendance of 60 drivers coming from all parts of northern Spain keen to race their 1/10th 2WD Buggies and Short Course trucks. Most drivers took the opportunity to practice on Saturday morning in order to adapt their rides to the grippy and bumpy astro surface until the seeding heats started early in the afternoon. In the 2WD buggy class, it was Pablo Fernández Rodríguez (Team Associated) who set the fastest three consecutive laps followed by David Bárcena (Xray) and Vari García (Xray), ahead of a pack of drivers where laptimes were incredibly close. Qualifying would be no different as Pablo managed to set an incredible pace –being the only driver to go around the track 12 times in all the five qualifying sessions and coming ahead in four out of five qualifying heats with only David Bárcena (Xray) managing to win only one heat and setting the fastest lap as Vari García took the 3rd position.
