Maifield does TQ triple at 'The Dirt'

Ryan Maifield pulled off the TQ triple at The Dirt Nitro Challenge as he added the overall buggy TQ to yesterday’s Truggy and eBuggy haul. Having topped the opening round of buggy qualifying at the Fear Farm, the reigning champion again led a TLR 1, 2 from Dakotah Phend to wrap up one round early the overall TQ for the blue ribbon class at the 17th running of the Joey Christensen event. Again it would be HB that provided the closest challenger this time Ty Tessmann finishing third as David Ronnefalk, 3rd in Q1, ran out of fuel on his penultimate lap.

Reigning Champion Maifield tops Q1 at DNC

Reigning Champion Maifield tops Q1 at DNC

Reigning Dirt Nitro Challenge Champion Ryan Maifield got his quest to retain his buggy title off to a good start this morning in Arizona as he topped the opening qualifier.  The 3-time champion lead a TLR 1,2 from team-mate Dakotah Phend, the pair separated by 1.5 seconds.  Having enjoyed a successful day at the Fear Farm yesterday when he TQ’d both Truggy and eBuggy, Maifield took the first of the three qualifiers after a late mistake from Team Associated’s Spencer Rivkin, while behind the TLRs, HB’s David Ronnefalk was best of the rest with the 3rd fastest time. Following Rivkin’s costly 8-second last lap crash which dropped him to 6th behind Ty Tessmann, Ryan Cavalieri would be top Team Associated in 4th.

Maifield TQs Truggy at ‘The Dirt’

Maifield TQs Truggy at 'The Dirt'

Ryan Maifield is Top Qualifier for Saturday’s Truggy A-Main at the Dirt Nitro Challenge after a surprise TQ run from Joe Bornhorst denied Ryan Cavalieri the overall TQ as both Maifield and Ty Tessmann crashed in the third & final round of qualifying.  Opening the day at the Fear Farm with the third fastest time and then posting a TQ in Q2, this was to be enough for Maifield to take his first DNC Truggy TQ since 2012 as he ended up with a 10th in the final qualifier. For Tessmann his error would again leave the Q1 pace setter with a fourth for the round that will see the DNC’s most winning truggy driver beginning his quest for a fifth title starting from second on the grid.  Finishing 1.5 seconds off Bornhorst’s pace, Cavalieri will start the 45-minute Main from 3rd on the grid with Bornhorst starting directly behind him.  For reigning champion David Ronnefalk he faces an uphill battle to defend his title as he starts 10th on the grid.

Maifield takes Q2 at ‘The Dirt’

Maifield takes Q2 at ‘The Dirt’

Ryan Maifield has TQ’d the second round of Truggy qualifying at the Dirt Nitro Challenge, the TLR driver fastest from a much improved reigning champion David Ronnefalk.  It was a somewhat lucky TQ for Maifield however as he would crash at the first attempt of running the heat but with the timing computer also crashing it forced the qualifier to be restarted.  Given a second chance he would make sure he didn’t crash again, having crashed in the opening round of both Truggy and e-Buggy, to top the times by half a second.  Completing the Top 3 would be Ryan Cavalieri followed by Q1 pace setter Ty Tessmann.
