SARDA Electric On-road Nationals Rd5 – Report

SARDA Electric On-road Nationals Rd5 – Report

The fifth and final round of the 2016 South-African ORE national championship returned to the TRAP RC Venue in Pretoria after round two was rained out at the same venue. Free practise was held on Thursday and Friday with a heat wave hitting the Gauteng province. The air temperature peaked at 38 Degree Celsius and the track temperature went up to 64 Degree. The heat put tremendous pressure on the batteries, tyres and electronics and the drivers had to choose their setups carefully and also manage the tyres during the race. The Touring Modified class is still growing stronger and all the drivers need to be at their best to qualify for the A-mains. All the top drivers pushed hard during the practice rounds and during qualifying but it was Shaun Schutte who dominated the class with his Xray during practise and qualifying to take TQ. There was a great battle between current champion Jason Hillcoat, Anderton Smith, Antonio Caroli and Ashley Hurley for the remaining grid positions. Anderton managed to take second after a good Q3 and Q4 with Antonio starting third in the A Mains.

Frederik Hovgaard wins at DRCMU Rd2

Frederik Hovgaard wins at DRCMU Rd2

The second round of the Danish DRCMU electric on-road nationals was held at the large and technical track of the Vejle Mini Race club. Local racer Frederik Hovgaard (Yokomo) made his intentions clear to win the race by setting the early pace and coming out fastest in Q1 with Patrick Hornum (Awesomatix) a second behind. Q2 then went not to plan for Frederik but he fought back in the third and final qualifier when he battled with Patrick and Mike for the overall TQ and with a last minute sprint, Frederik was able to take a maiden overall TQ in the Modified class. In the opening A-main a big crash further down the field allowed Frederik to pull a large gap and so he was able to cruise to the win. At the start of A2 everyone took off with no problems and after getting into grips, Frederik was able to open a small gap on the number 2 driver and with the latter making a small mistake, Frederik even enlarged the distance, allowing him to bring home the win and with it his first national win in the Touring Modified class. Patrick Hornum would end the day on the 2 spot from Mike Gosvig (Xray) in third.

Thanks to Frederik Hovgaard for the report.
