While the track dried, drivers faced much cooler conditions than normal as the sun never managed to break through the thick cloud cover with it particularly cold for the 4th and final round of practice. Fastest both in outright lap time and over 3-consecutive laps, Volker led the way from JJ Wang with Christopher Krapp third quickest. For reigning champion Marc Rheinard the day would end with him 5th fastest with him declaring he is ‘not as confident as I was after practice last year’. The highly-anticipated first race at the brand-new Steel City RC Speedway went down this weekend, and it did not disappoint. The inaugural PROTOform Nitro Grand Prix attracted nearly 150 entries in six classes from all-across the United States, including factory drivers JJ Wang, Joaquin De Soto Jr. and Mike Swauger. Built on the grounds of Auto Club Speedway, home of NASCAR, Indycar, drag racing, autocross and karting tracks, the racing atmosphere at the new facility is second-to-none. The first round of this year’s Asian Onroad Championships was held at Shanghai’s RCIv2 facility. In Modified Touring it was the two Team Destiny drivers Yugo Nagashima and Jin Sawada, claiming a win each in the opening A-mains, who would decide the race for the overall win. In the hunt though for a top spot also was 2nd qualifier Xray driver JJ Wang who had a 2nd and a 4th place finish coming into the A3 final. The Shanghai Nitro 1/8 scale Racing Club, also known as Team N8, kicked off its 2018 season in Suzhou, China this weekend. Team N8 is the brainchild of Rick Wang and Ben Lai who both share the passion for nitro racing. The race format is unique in a way that the qualifying result is based on the three best consecutive laps achieved in a 60-minutes qualifying session where drivers can decide when is the best time to go on a clear track. Round 1 of CTS3 was held at Rise Up Hobbytown in Palm Desert, California this past weekend. The inaugural race for the facility was perfect and designed well. For Modified Touring, it was Team Xray driver JJ Wang who showed a dominant performance clinching the TQ honors and A-main followed by Awesomatix driver Brandon Clements and defending Champion Rick Hohwart. In 17.5 Touring Spec it was Brandon Clements who left a statement leaving the competition almost two laps down. His Awesomatix TC had excellent rip and corner speed. The Protoform Cup 2017 was held at Cal Raceway in Orange, California this past weekend. In the premier Touring Modified class Rick Hohwart, JJ Wang and Randy Caster all battled for the overall TQ with all three scoring round TQs and the tie-breaker deciding the grid positions. Ultimately it was Rick who took the pole position for the triple A-mains by 0.13 seconds. JJ would line up 2nd from Randy in 3rd.
